After 12 long years of bitter civil war between the Indy Racing League Indycar Series and the Champ Car World Series, the new unified series took to the track for the first event of 2008 last weekend at Miami-Homestead Speedway to begin the new Indycar Series season. With less than a month of preparation, 5 former Champ Car teams consisting of 8 car/driver combinations joined veteran Indycar teams for a starting field of 25 cars. The race went off Saturday night under the lights on ESPN2HD with relatively little drama and carnage.
Considering that it was the first ever oval race for 7 of these drivers, I think recognition is due to all that competed and made it a safe race. Tony Kanaan made the move of the race my maneuvering his car at over 200 mph and preventing a side impact of the spinning car of EJ Viso as he hit the wall after losing a rear tire to a puncture. As we saw last season, Milka Duno seemed out of her league on the track and spun late in the race, also impacting the wall. Interesting, rather ironic that the two Venezuelan drivers in the race, both sponsored by Hugo Chavez' oil cartels, were the only two that crashed in the race. Yes, Ryan Briscoe also crashed but like Kanaan, he simply hit the spinning car of his Venezuelan opponent.
Here is a great pic I found on Indycar.com of Danica's car bottoming out on a heavy fuel load after first or second round pit stops.
Now that the series are one, I am looking forward to coming years in American open-wheel racing more than ever before. Now, I can call it Indycar again!
