Yes, I know. I am a bit late to post my first race report of the year and I do not have a good reason why. Perhaps it has just taken me nearly a month to recover from the ear shattering, heart stopping roar of two 9000HP top fuel dragsters accelerating from 0-310 mph in less than 5 seconds.
Last month, Bill and I drove down deep into the NC heartland for the IHRA Nitro Jam Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway. For those in the know, Rockingham Dragway and the adjoining North Carlina Motor Speedway are affectionately known as 'The Rock'. Both tracks have a proud history of hosting races for NASCAR, NHRA and IHRA competition.
Today, not much big time racing comes to rural Rockingham, NC so when the IHRA rolls into town, the race fans come out. I haven't been to The Rock since around 1994-95 when the NASCAR Cup and Busch Series raced at the speedway that occupied two dates on the annual schedule. Back then, Jeff 'the rainbow warrior' Gordon was winning his first races and championships while Dale senior fans were furious that the kid from out west was whooping the Initmidator on his home tracks. I recall what a rough and rowdy crowd occupied the stands at The Rock so when we made plans for this race, I was looking forward to people watching almost as much as the racing.
Bill and I went on Sunday for the final round of eliminations, semi finals and finals. As you can see, it was a good day of racing...
